Google AdSense gives publishers some basic statistics that are very helpful to optimizing websites. But Google also leaves out a lot of things. For example, how do you know what traffic sources are generating the most clicks? Which keywords are attracting the most viewers that are interested in ads?

To get more advanced AdSense tracking you have to go for paid services. Some offer their own servers to log data for you. In fact, they can log some very advanced aspects of a website. For example, AdSpy Tracker lets publishers know exactly what ads were clicked, including their colors and position.

Other trackers, like AdSpy, are installed within your own server, giving you ultimate control over the data gathered. Before purchasing these products though make sure your web hosting has MySQL support.

If you don't have a budget, then there is an option for free, advanced AdSense tracking.

First, go to Google Analytics and set up an account. Analytics is a free tracker for general website statistics. What we are going to do, is link Analytics and Adsense together. Unfortunately there is no way to do this directly or officially, so we need some tricks.

SEOBook has a free tracking script that goes on pages with AdSense. It does not modify the AdSense code, so it is within Google TOS.

However there's a problem, the tracker on SEOBook does not work anymore! When Analytics upgraded to a new version it broke the tracker, luckily for you, I have included a fixed version at the bottom of this page.

Just follow the instructions on the AdSense tracking page, but instead of their version of the tracking script, use the one at the bottom of this page.

Note that the number of clicks reported by Analytics and AdSense will be off, but it's not too terrible and the ratio between days is consistent.
